Nova Scotia has an active hunting and trapping community. Personally I'm not a huge fan of hunting but can live with it. Trapping however, I believe to be completely inhumane and barbaric.

Regardless of how you feel about it you need to respect the rules and be safe. It only takes one mistake for tragedy to occur. Better safe than sorry!

Please be sure that both you and your dog wear hunters orange when on outdoor walks in the woods and avoid areas commonly used for trapping and hunting. My dog Nelson is also wearing a bear bell in this picture.

Did you know that Bear season opens September 12th in Nova Scotia? It's already time to be careful although not many people are out hunting bear.

The really dangerous time is Deer season, which runs from October 29th - December 4th. You need to be extremely careful during this time if you choose to walk in the woods with your dog.

Please be sure you understand and Nova Scotia trapping laws and be sure your favorite wilderness walk is not along a trapping trail. Here is a page from the Trapper's Association of Nova Scotia on how to dogproof racoon traps.

On this site you can read about dogs from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick that have been killed or hurt in traps.

Because of public protest from dog owners and dog lovers and tireless volunteer groups Nova Scotia passed new legislation to help protect dogs from being injured or killed in traps. See...your voice is important!

Here some great pictures about the inhumane traps being set along the trails in the Hubley area in Nova Scotia.
